Cuatrociénegas is one of the 38 municipalities in the state of Coahuila de Zaragoza, in northern Mexico, in the Centro Desierto de Coahuila Region, its municipal seat is the city of Cuatrociénegas de Carranza. In November 1994, the government decreed that the Cuatrocienegas Valley be protected as a Cuatrociénegas Flora and Fauna Protection Area. The city is famous for the springs and lagoons that surround it and that flourish in the middle of the desert. These springs, which constitute a biosphere reserve, form a unique ecosystem with endemic species. It is considered the Mexican Galapagos for its biodiversity and high rate of endemism.
